The President of the Board of HLF, Ms. Anna Dobrowolska, participated in an international conference from 29-30 September 2004. The conference, which was held in Villa Decius in Krakow, was held under the theme: “Rebuilding Peace in Post-Conflict Communities: The Role of the Media and Civil Organizations.”
The conference, which was organized under the patronage of the Consulate General of the US Embassy in Krakow and the Marshal of the Malopolska Region, brought together many outstanding personalities: ambassadors, UNHCR representatives, UN representatives in post-conflict countries, army generals, presidents of NGOs and famous journalists from Poland and abroad.
US Retired Maj. Gen. William L. Nash (Director for the Center of Preventive Action, Council of Foreign Relations) is talking about International experiences in terminating conflicts and possibilities of cooperation between the international community and local administrations and the media.
The aim of the conference was to present issues and solutions connected with bringing back stability to war-torn countries, focusing on the role of international organizations, the media and NGOs. The speeches delivered by the facilitators were extremely interesting, as all of them have personally worked in various post-war countries. Hence, they could share their own experience with the audience. Each speech was followed by a discussion. The conference was accompanied by documentaries and an exhibition of pictures from Iraq.
At the end of the conference the participants agreed that rendering assistance to the needy is the obligation and responsibility of the modern world. However, help doesn’t only mean giving money. Educated professionals and advisers are also considered very necessary. To act more efficiently, NGO’s should coordinate their activities and work in cooperation with local people, while adjusting the programs to the conditions/traditions/customs of the given country and the target groups’ needs. It is also very important to put some effort to increase social awareness concerning the needs of people of the post-war and developing countries among the western societies.
From L-R: Roza Thun, President of the Polish R. Schuman Foundation; Krzysztof Sliwinski, former Ambassador of Poland to Morocco and the Republic of South Africa; HE: Sikose Mji, Ambassador of the Republic of South Africa to Poland. They are discussing democracy and the pressure of dialogue.
