The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Liberia, having conducted a scores of hearings, has presented its findings and recommendations to the public.
The Commission was set up to identify and document the root causes of the Liberian civil war and determine those who committed domestic and international crimes against the people of Liberia, including war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The establishment of the TRC was proposed in August of 2003 in Ghana at the end of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), which effected the official end of the fourteen-year Liberian Civil War. Then, in 2005, the TRC was officially and legally established by an act of the Liberian Legislature. It commenced operations in June of 2006.
According to the final reports, the Commission is recommending the debarment of certain individuals from holding public offices, as well as a war crimes trial for others, according to their level of involvement the crimes committed against the Liberian people.
