HLF Starts Vocational Training In Liberia

Posted by Help Liberia Foundation on February 02, 2009

We are pleased to inform everyone, especially our sponsors, that the foundation has commenced the vocational training section of its programs.

The first phase of the vocational training program, which is the establishment of the typing training in the school, was started in November of 2008. The purpose of the program is to help the children get some vocational education, besides the regular academic lessons they receive.

A total of ten typewriters were bought for the typing program. We intend to buy additional ten typewriters, if we manage to raise some money.

The parents and the kids of the school are both excited and grateful about the introduction of the typing program. It is a rare opportunity, as our school is the only primary school that is offering the typing program in the City of Buchanan. It’s the very first time that all of the children are having the opportunity to use a typewriter.

“My fingers and hands really used to hurt me from the beginning, but my fingers are strong now.” Explained Aaron Nuah, a student of the 4th grade class.

Ishmael Yancy, another student of the school, smiled and remarked, “I sometimes have cramped fingers. But I will not give up.”

Mr. Aaron Gorweh, a graduate of the Booker Washington Institute (BWI) in Liberia, who is also an experienced typist, is the typing instructor of our school.

The second phase of the vocational training program, which we intend to start as soon as possible, is the introduction of the sewing program. We intend to purchase at least ten sewing machines to start with. Each costs about US$150, but we do not have the funds to start now. We would appreciate any assistance we receive from any individual or institution for the purchase of the sewing machines.
